Nuna PIPA RX vs Cybex Cloud T vs Joie mint latch: Which Fits You?

How three popular infant car seats differ on weight, price, base design and extras, based on our catalog facts, with the situation each one fits best.

Three infant car seats keep showing up in the comparisons parents read: the Nuna PIPA RX, the Cybex Cloud T SensorSafe, and the Joie mint latch baseless infant car seat. In our scan of current pages, all three are holding steady rather than rising or falling. They are also very different products, so "which is best" has no single answer. This article lays out what our catalog says about each, and which situation each one fits better.

One disclosure first: Stroller Lab has not independently tested these products. Everything below comes from our catalog's product facts and from summaries of public reviews. Where a number comes from reviewers rather than a manufacturer, I say so.

The "catalog score" figures are our own feature ratings, where a higher number means the catalog rates that feature more favorably. They are relative comparisons, not lab results.

Nuna PIPA RX: the lightest of the three

At 7.6 lb listed, the PIPA RX is the lightest seat here, and our catalog gives it a 3 for weight, cabin fit, canopy UPF, weatherproofing, cooling and travel-system compatibility. If you will be carrying the seat a lot, such as in and out of the car many times a day or through an airport, weight is the factor that matters most, and this is where the PIPA RX fits best.

What else the catalog lists:

  • Certifications: FMVSS 213 and FMVSS 213a side impact (both listed as certified), FAA approval, and GREENGUARD Gold fabrics. It carries a 4/5 NHTSA ease-of-use rating.
  • Base: The RELX base is listed with rigid LATCH and a load leg.
  • Warranty: One year against manufacturing defects for the original purchaser, extended to two years with a purchase of a Nuna travel bag through its Boarding Pass program.

Two notes from our catalog. The anti-rebound bar adds bulk when you carry the seat without its base, and canopy coverage is described as limited compared with some competing infant seats. If a large canopy is your priority, the Joie's UPF 50+ canopy may fit that need better.

The catalog does not list a price for the PIPA RX, so check current retailer pricing yourself.

Cybex Cloud T SensorSafe: the near-flat recline and the chest clip

The Cloud T is the heaviest of the three at 12 lb listed, and our catalog gives it the lowest weight score (1) and cabin-fit score (1). In exchange, it scores a 3 for flat recline and cooling.

A summary of public reviews, drawn from Babylist and community discussions, points to a consistent set of positives:

  • Near-flat recline, which reviewers say supports comfortable positioning for an infant.
  • A SensorSafe Bluetooth chest clip that reviewers say alerts for unbuckling, temperature extremes and a forgotten infant. Reviewers cite the forgotten-infant alert as a meaningful differentiator.
  • A 4 to 30 lb range with a 12-position headrest, which reviewers say allows longer use in the infant seat.
  • Travel-system compatibility with all Cybex strollers.

Certifications in our catalog: FMVSS 213, side impact compliance as stated by Cybex, GREENGUARD Gold and FAA approval.

On price, that review summary cites $649.95. It reports that most reviewers see this as a justified premium, while a minority say comparable crash protection is available for less. Both views are reviewers' opinions, not ours. If that price is out of range, the Joie at $299.99 is the lower-cost option in this group, with a different set of features.

Joie mint latch: the baseless option

The Joie is the one genuinely different design here. Per its listing, rigid lower-anchor connectors are built into the carrier shell, so there is no separate base to buy, store or move between cars. Our catalog lists it at 9.3 lb and $299.99, with three recline angles, a 4 to 30 lb range and a UPF 50+ canopy.

That fits a few situations well: a household with more than one vehicle, frequent rideshare or taxi trips, or a relative's car. It is also listed as FAA certified for aircraft use with the seat belt, and it is compatible with Joie strollers as a travel system.

The trade-offs, again from our catalog and review summary: the 9.3 lb weight is listed as heavy for a baseless carrier, and the manufacturer page states a weight limit but no rear-facing height limit. Its prior Target aggregate is 4.5 out of 5 from 67 reviews, a small sample.

For installation questions on any of these seats, a certified child passenger safety technician is the right person to ask, and seatcheck.org can help you find one.

Which one fits which situation

  • You carry the seat a lot: The PIPA RX is the lightest at 7.6 lb and scores highest for weight in our catalog.
  • You want near-flat recline and active alerts, and the budget allows: The Cloud T SensorSafe fits that best, at the cost of the most weight and the highest cited price.
  • You want to avoid a separate base, or move between cars: The Joie mint latch is the only baseless design here, and it has the lowest listed price.
  • You care about low-emission fabrics: Our catalog lists GREENGUARD Gold for the Nuna and the Cybex, but not for the Joie.
  • You already own a stroller: Check compatibility. Cybex seats are listed as compatible with Cybex strollers and Joie with Joie strollers. The Nuna carries a travel-system score of 3, but the catalog does not say which strollers, so confirm before buying.

Recalls and registration

Our catalog lists no recalls for any of the three. Cybex's recalls cover the earlier Cloud Q and Aton line, not the Cloud T, and Nuna recalled its Rava convertible line in December 2024, which does not include the PIPA RX. That is catalog information and can go out of date. Verify any seat at cpsc.gov and nhtsa.gov, and register whichever seat you buy with the manufacturer.

Where to read more

In our scan of current pages, these seats appear at BabyGearLab (Nuna PIPA RX and Joie mint latch) and Consumer Reports (Cybex Cloud T). That is our own reading of what those sites currently feature, and they are places to read more, including independent testing, which we do not do.

My take

If I had to give one opinion the facts support: weight and price are the two numbers that separate these seats most clearly. The PIPA RX is the lightest, the Joie is the cheapest listed and the only baseless one, and the Cloud T is the heaviest with a cited premium price and the most distinctive feature set. Decide first whether you are carrying the seat, moving it between cars, or want the extra features, and the choice usually narrows quickly.
