What a first year of Dr. Brown’s bottles actually costs in time — nipple flow levels decoded, an interactive 0–18 month feeding timeline, and the how-many-bottles arithmetic every guide skips.
How many baby bottles do I actually need?
Published guidance ranges from 2 to 12, and none of it does the arithmetic. The real formula is: bottles = feeds during your cleaning turnaround + daycare fleet + a spare margin. Washing after every feed genuinely needs about 3; running one dishwasher cycle overnight needs about 8. Same baby — the variable is how often you clean, not the baby.
What do bottle nipple flow levels mean?
They are not comparable between brands. A study of 375 nipples across 25 types concluded that packaging information did not accurately reflect actual flow rates. Dr. Brown’s narrow Level 1 measures around 7.7 mL/min; Philips Avent Level 1 measures around 16 mL/min — more than twice as fast, same label.
How long does prepared formula last?
CDC gives 2 hours from preparation at room temperature, 1 hour from the moment feeding starts, and 24 hours refrigerated. Opened powder is used within about a month, stored cool and dry rather than refrigerated. Anything left in a bottle the baby has drunk from gets discarded.
Do anti-colic bottles work?
The largest randomised trial of vented bottles (n=1,041, 2026) was null on both gastrointestinal discomfort and colic. One secondary outcome — crying during or after feeding — did favour venting. The mechanism is physically sound; the claim that these bottles reduce colic is weak to absent in evidence.
When can I remove the Dr. Brown’s vent?
Dr. Brown’s criteria are developmental, not age-based: the baby can sit up unassisted, has begun solids, and is not showing signs of colic, gas, or reflux. Removing the vent does not speed up the flow — flow is governed by the nipple level.
Do formula preparation machines heat water to 70°C?
Generally no. The Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advanced does not reach 70°C and its manual requires distilled or pre-boiled water cooled to room temperature. A 2023 study found only 14.9% of prep machines reached 70°C or above, against 78.3% of kettles.
